Ballyconnell
Situated near the Fermanagh Border and overlooked by the Slieve Russell
mountain is Ballyconnell, a town named after a Celtic Ford. Highly regarded
for its coarse fishing, it has also won numerous National Tidy Town
awards. Just outside the town is a replica of the Killycluggin Stone
which was found here. Dating back to the Iron Age, this important stone
contains Celtic motifs first found at La TŠne in Switzerland. The
original is now on display in the National Museum.
Finnea
Fishing Boats can be hired at Finnea, a picturesque little village which
belies its troubled history. It was here that the brave Myles Slasher
O'Reilly and his band of a hundred men fended off a thousand of Cromwell's
soldiers at the bridge! On route is some of the country's most scenic
landscape complemented by views of Lough Sheelin where you can stop
to fish trout.
Cavan Town
Cavan has seen some turbulent times in its history. The county town
of Cavan was burned to the ground in 1576, apparently by one of the
women from the O'Reilly clan in a fit of jealously. She followed in
the footsteps of a Franciscan friar who burnt down the 14th century
friary in 1451. A few miles from the town is Ballyhaise House which
was designed by Richard Cassells.
